Ron Wattie had an easy smile and a heart of gold.  He didn’t understand the meaning of the word “no”.  When he was needed, he was there. End of story. He was the kind of person you could always, always count on. He gave of himself; his time and his heart.

Ron died in a tragic traffic accident on October 4th as he was on his way to work as a Dialysis Tech at Buffalo General. He was a 30 year employee. Ron has been a member of the Highland Hose Volunteer Fire Company since 1979. He was an avid outdoorsman and a devoted husband and father.

Ron was an active member of CWA 1168 and a Chief Steward. He participated in the Annual Day of Caring and was a member of the Local’s Community Service Committee.

On February 18th, CWA 1168, in partnership with Kaleida Health, will be hosting a fundraiser in Ron’s memory. All proceeds will go to the Highland Hose Volunteer Fire company to purchase life saving equipment.

At Buffalo General, the benefit will include a bake good sale, a Chinese auction and a 50/50 split. At DeGraff, Millard Fillmore Suburban, and Millard Fillmore Gates, members of the Highland Hose Fire Company along with representatives from this Local will be doing a “boot” collection at the Gates.

We will be accepting donations of baskets for the Chinese Auction and baked goods.  All baked goods should be covered.  If you are interested in donating these items, please let us know by contacting any of the following individuals.

Ron’s legacy of “I am here to help” will continue.  But we need your help.  Please join Ron’s family, members from the Highland Hose Volunteer Fire Company, and representatives from our local in the BGH cafeteria from 6:30 am to 4:00 pm on February 18th, or at the Gate.  Collections at Millard Fillmore Gates, Millard Fillmore Suburban and DeGraff from 6:30 am to 9:00 am.

Note:  Cash only at the tables.  Donations by checks can be made out to “Highland Hose Volunteer Fire Company Inc.”  Please write in the check memo line “Ron Wattie Fund.”
