Buffalo Stars Invite Public to "Give Blood, Watch Hockey" | Community Spirit
The Buffalo Stars Junior Hockey Club will host a Health Expo as part of their home stand Saturday, October 23, 2010 at Holiday Twin Rinks, 3465 Broadway near Union in Cheektowaga.
On this date, the Stars’ Continental Hockey Association club will face the Springfield (MA) Junior Pics at 4:15pm, while the Stars’ Empire Junior Hockey League team hosts the Brewster (NY) Bulldogs at 7:15pm.
“We’re an athletic organization, so fitness is obviously important to us,” said Buffalo Stars President and General Manager Pete Preteroti. “But we think it’s just as important to help our hockey fans and families think about fitness too, not just our players.”
During the Stars’ two scheduled games that afternoon and evening, Upstate New York Transplant Services (UNYTS) will host blood donations inside the rink while representatives from Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) will distribute potentially life-saving information on topics including smoking cessation.
“Arming yourself with information is a key part of taking care of your health,” said Colleen Karuza, Director of Public Affairs at RPCI. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to connect with the Stars community at these games.”
People interested in donating blood to UNYTS should contact the Buffalo Stars front office at 716-685-1122. You must be at least 17 years old, or 16 with adult consent, and in good health. A photo ID is required to sign up. Those who donate blood during the Stars’ Health Expo will receive free admission to the games as well as a coupon good for a free personal pizza from Santora’s.
This is just one several projects the Stars organization takes on during the regular season to stay involved with the greater Buffalo-area community.
