BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Early Childhood Direction Center (ECDC) of WNY, administered by Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, received a five year contract from the New York State Education Department to continue providing services for families and professionals serving children birth to five with diagnosed or suspected special needs.

The ECDC was established in 1979 and the mission of ECDC is to ensure that children, birth to five years, with suspected or diagnosed delays or disabilities, are linked to appropriate services that will enable them to reach their potential.

ECDC provides free training and technical assistance for families and professionals working with children less than five years of age with suspected or diagnosed delays or disabilities.

Services provided by the ECDC include information on services and programs in the counties of Erie, Niagara, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Allegany, Wyoming and Orleans as well as information on preschool educational laws and regulations. ECDC provides information, workshops, and support for families of children transitioning from Early Intervention to Preschool Special Education and from Preschool Special Education to school age special education services, as well as the professionals who work with this population.

The ECDC specializes in creating partnerships between child care and special education professionals by providing professional and family workshops, on site technical assistance to child care providers as well as assistance via telephone and email to ensure that children are able to successfully participate in typical preschool settings.

Additional services include information on understanding the preschool special education system, email- list serve - which offers Federal, State and local information to providers and families/caregivers on special education resources and related information, information on funding and where/how to access services, and technical assistance for child care centers on services for children with special needs.
