NEW Asthma Screening Program Kicks-Off At The Belle Center

The Asthma Screening Program at The Belle Center kicked-off this week on MLK Day. (Sponsored in part by the New York State Department of Health, Office of Minority Health)  It addresses the high rates of Asthma in the Buffalo community by developing Asthma management strategies for children residing in Buffalo’s West Side through education, screening and at home assessments.

Being screened for Asthma is a simple procedure that includes filling out a questionnaire and taking a breathing test. All results of the breathing test will be read by an allergist and the results will be provided to the family. After the first breathing test, the Community Health Worker and Buffalo AmeriCorps members assigned to this initiative will visit the home at a time that is most convenient for the family to help identify and eliminate Asthma triggers and to create a “My Asthma Plan” to keep the Asthma under control. Partners include PUSH Buffalo, D’Youville College School of Nursing and Asthma Coalition of WNY.

After a home visit, if the family qualifies they can receive:

-Hypoallergenic pillows

-Bed covering sheet

-Education material

-Constant support of the Community Health Worker to fix problems with the housing environment

This program is for children ages 0-16 with Asthma.
