Buffalo designer Marcella Co on the runway at FWB 2014 | Arts & Culture
Fashion week Brooklyn closed on sunday and it was filled with some of the top emerging designer I caught up women(s) ready to wear designer Marcella Co after the show and here what she had to say.
Getthebuzz716: Tell me a little about your brand. Where are you from?
Marcella Co. : Marcello Co. is a sophisticated yet classic line for women in business- from the rising young professional out of college to the corporate business executive. I often love using and blending unconventional textures and prints to add to a, marcella co. tweaked, classic silhouette.
I am originally from the Buffalo, NY area.
Getthebuzz716:What does fashion week Brooklyn mean to you?
Marcella Co. To me Fashion Week Brooklyn offers me a chance to expose my brand to a professional, yet hip group of individuals. I hope to meet store owners and buyers that will want to carry my brand in their stores or other industry professionals that can help me promote my brand.
Getthebuzz716: How would you define your Brand?
Marcella Co. My brand is for the woman who knows what she wants—and gets it. She’s a confident women that doesn’t take “no” for and answer- unless that’s the answer she’s looking for. She stands alone if she has to, but usually doesn’t because other like to be around her.
My brand provides an ease of wearing, but with a punch of style and glam to make it stand out from the rest. It’s classic style with yet a modern edge.
Getthebuzz716:How long does it usually take you to construct a piece?
Marcello Co. : I can construct, for example a suit, in 2-3 days. That’s from design, to creating and cutting the pattern and sewing it together. That’s if I have 2-3 days of mostly uninterrupted time to work. And that’s having my wonderful 4 year old daughter assisting me throughout the process. Lol.
Getthebuzz716: Describe the general process you go through to design and what’s your favorite part about conceptualizing a design?
Marcella Co. My general process of designing is: 1) inspiration 2) drawing 3) creating my pattern from my drawing (making sure all measurements will create the look I desire) 4) selecting the right fabrics, buttons, interfacing, etc. to obtain the desired drape and look for the initial design 5) cutting out the fabric 6) construction- sewing the fabric pieces together.
I must say that my favorite part of being a fashion designer is the construction. Because I love to watch God's work come alive through my hands from the start, yet the finish is the manifestation of what was once just a vision and idea.
Getthebuzz716 :What matters to you most as a designer?
Marcella Co.: What matters most to me as a designer is submitting myself to how God chooses to use me in this industry. It’s about Him- not me and I can’t forget that.
Getthebuzz716 : What do you believe makes a quality design?
Marcella Co.: I believe the right fabric for the right design is key. How the finish piece hangs on the body; how it with stands use; and how it lasts makes a design valuable to the customer- in turn making them a repeat customer.
Getthebuzz716: How would you define the style your line exemplifies?
Marcella Co.: Classic with a modern edge
Getthebuzz716: What are some of your fashion goals?
Marcella Co.: My goal as a designer is first to make sure I expose my designs to store owners, buyers, etc. I want to make sure I get my designs in front of people that want to help me promote my brand. I do not simply want to show my clothes for entertainment purpose only.I want my designs sold in boutiques and stores nationally and internationally. My goal is to be a world-wide recognized brand with a good reputation and continuously increasing sells. I later want to open Marcella co. stores in the major fashion market cities in the US and internationally.
Getthebuzz716:What other experience do you have in the fashion industry (stylist, retail, marketing, etc.)?
Marcella Co. I have other fashion industry experience in retail, producing fashion shows, working in fabric stores and modeling.
Getthebuzz716:What are your favorite patterns/materials [prints] to work with and why?
Marcella Co.: I really like making suits and therefore like working with suiting fabrics. I like creating with black because it’s sleek and sharp. And though I like these, I am not limited to being creative with other patterns, materials or colors.
