Bishop Malone to Preside Over Ordination in Wellsville

Bishop Richard J. Malone will ordain Rev. Mr. John Cornelius to the priesthood on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 5 p.m., at Immaculate Conception Church in Wellsville, for the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter.  The ordinariate is for those groups of Anglicans in the United States who seek to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church.  It was established by Pope Benedict XVI on Jan. 1, 2012, and allows for the ordination of married former Episcopal and Anglican priests.

Deacon Cornelius, 64, grew up in Bolivar, attended Allegany College in Meadville, Penn., SUNY at Fredonia and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy.  After receiving his masters of Divinity degree from the Episcopal Seminary at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., he served as an Episcopal priest for 20 years at parishes in Florida, New York, Rhode Island and Texas. He and his wife Sharyl converted to Catholicism two years ago.  He was ordained a transitional deacon on Nov. 17, 2012, and is currently serving as a pastoral associate at SS. Brendan and Jude Parish in Almond.

To prepare for the priesthood, the married father of three spent every Saturday for 20 weeks taking a distance learning course from the University of Houston.

Following his ordination, he will lead the Fellowship of Saint Alban in Henrietta (Diocese of Rochester), a small community of former Anglicans who have joined the Catholic Church.  When available, he will also assist with ministry at parishes in Allegany County.
