On Saturday, June 25th, the Theodore Roosevelt Site and Preservation Buffalo Niagara’s Buffalo Tours will join forces again to present a walking tour event that is sure to be a show-stopper - the Delaware Neighborhood Tour of Homes. Throughout Buffalo’s Golden Age, which lasted from the Civil War to the 1920s, Delaware Avenue was the most desirable place to live and a treasure trove of magnificent homes designed by the country’s most renowned architects were built on the grand thoroughfare.  Eventually, streets that paralleled and crossed Delaware became equally desirable and magnificent homes were built by some of the same architects. Oakland Place and Summer Street still boast a number of these exquisite treasures.

In this totally unique tour experience, a number of Buffalo’s grandest Gilded Age mansions will be open to the public for a rare glimpse inside the homes of the city’s wealthiest citizens.  Several of these mansions are now public buildings but others are still private residences, carefully restored and adapted to fine modern living in the 21st century.

The Delaware Neighborhood Tour of Homes will be a self-guided, “go at your own pace” experience with highly trained docents sharing the fascinating history of each of the properties.   Tour participants will revisit some of the neighborhood’s perennial favorites, the “must see” mansions including the palatial homes of the Butler and Knox families. A new addition for this year’s tour is the Clement House, now home to the American Red Cross Greater Buffalo Chapter as well as all new homes on Oakland Place and Summer Street.

Included in the tour cost is a lecture by architectural historian Martin Wachadlo on the history and architecture of the Delaware neighborhood, which will include intriguing insights on the homes that will be toured.  The lecture is scheduled for Wednesday, June 15th at 5:30 pm at the TR Site.

The tour sites will be open from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm.  Begin the tour at the Theodore Roosevelt Site, 641 Delaware Avenue and then stroll back in time to the grandeur that was Buffalo’s heyday.  Ticket holders can also experience the amazing changes at the TR Site and learn more about our 26th President and his enduring legacy from 9:30 am until 4:00 pm. Complimentary lemonade and cookies will serve as a pleasant treat, too.  Advance tickets are $25 ($20 for members of either organization) or $30 on the day of the event.  Purchase at the TR Site, the Market Arcade at 617 Main Street or call (716) 852-3300.  Due to the nature of the tour, ticket sales are limited.  The tour was a complete sell-out last year and we hope to repeat that success!
