asap is Buffalo’s first recipient of a New York State AIA design award for commercial architecture

asap/adam sokol architecture practice has been awarded the 2015 Design Award for Commercial/Industrial Large Architecture by the American Institute of Architects New York State for The Emperor Hotel Beijing Qianmen located in Beijing, China. asap is the first Buffalo, NY firm ever to win this award from AIA New York State.

“It’s an honor to be Buffalo’s first recipient of this statewide award for commercial architecture.  We hope to continue to contribute to Buffalo and Western New York while also developing our global profile,” said Adam Sokol, principal, asap. “The Emperor Hotel Beijing Qianmen was an ambitious design as it is organized not by spaces and circulation, but by emotions and dreams and not by materials and details, but by illusions and memories.”

The site of the 65,000 square foot Emperor Hotel Beijing Qianmen was once occupied by a public bath and so the spirit of bathing and mystery lives on in the new hotel, which opened in 2014. The 65 guest rooms are designed to provide visitors with a peaceful respite from the energy of Beijing. From the l’Occitane Spa below ground to Beijing’s largest hotel roof bar above and a comprehensive suite of food and beverage, conference and meeting spaces, the Emperor offers visitors and residents alike a new public space and a new experience of the historic city. asap also received a 2014 Illumination Award from The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America for The Emperor Hotel Beijing Qianmen, as well as a design award from the Buffalo/Western New York chapter of the American Institute of Architects.  In addition, the hotel has been featured in more than 40 articles and publications worldwide.

“The scope and the uniqueness, a ‘raining’ hotel, is quite impressive. The vision to incorporate ancient Chinese philosophies into a contemporary designed space is truly a work of art,” said Timothy Boyland, AIA, AIANYS president. “Some of the most magnificent architecture in the world is being created by New York State Architects and Adam epitomizes what our architects are capable of. We congratulate him and his firm on his AIA New York State Design Award”

Since 1968, the AIA New York State recognizes outstanding works of architecture through its Design Awards Program. The program was instituted to celebrate, honor and promote excellence in design by New York State architects for their creativity and imagination in solving design problems for their clients and to generate greater public interest in architecture.
