West Side Neighborhood Housing Services recognized as NeighborWorks Green Organization

West Side Neighborhood Housing Services in Buffalo has been recognized as a NeighborWorks Green Organization for its comprehensive commitment to sustainable operations.  To achieve this designation, West Side NHS was required to demonstrate adherence to a set of green business practices across its operations and all of its program areas.

This is the second consecutive year that NeighborWorks America has recognized member organizations for their efforts to create healthier, energy-efficient environments for homeowners, renters, community residents and employees. To date, 42 NeighborWorks organizations have achieved this designation.

West Side Neighborhood Housing Services, which preserves and revitalizes Buffalo neighborhoods by providing safe, affordable and sustainable housing opportunities, is committed to green practices, including:

·         Maintaining flexible green hours to save energy and reduce commuting;

·         Establishing green commuting incentives and a green purchasing policy;

·         Retooling counseling and education programs to cover green topics that save money, protect home investments, and keep families healthy;

·         Referring to green building specs for 100% of home improvement rehabilitation projects;

·         Addressing healthy food access in neighborhoods by running a Farmers’ Market and sponsoring a community garden in the city’s Riverside neighborhood.

“The green strategies we have adopted save families money, improve health outcomes, and reduce our environmental impact,” said Linda Chiarenza, Executive Director of West Side Neighborhood Housing Services. “The NeighborWorks Green Designation is an opportunity for us to publicly acknowledge our commitment to sustainability.”

NeighborWorks America, which creates opportunities for people to live in affordable homes, improve their lives and strengthen their communities, supports a network of more than 240 nonprofits, located in every state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

“West Side Neighborhood Housing Services is a leader in sustainable business practices, helping individuals and families become healthier with an improved quality of life,” said NeighborWorks America CEO Eileen M. Fitzgerald.

The NeighborWorks Green Organization designation is significant because it challenges organizations to be comprehensive in their efforts to be green. Collectively, these activities help reduce energy and water consumption and costs, create healthier living and working environments, and promote sustainable communities.
