BUFFALO, NY-AUGUST 13, 2015- What happens when a community driven not-for profit teams with the trendiest Hearth in town?

An opportunity to save Western New York lives.

Join Save the Michaels of the World at Hydraulic Hearth on Thursday, August 13 from 5:30-7:30 to share a little, and learn a little about a community organization intent on providing the Western New York area with services and resources of a critical nature.

Have you ever discovered something happening in our comunity that took you completely by surprise?

Save the Michaels of the World, Inc., (STMOTW) is a not-for-profit created at the kitchen table of Buffalo natives Avi and Julie Israel following the devastating death of their son. After a long and painful struggle with Crohn's disease, Michael David Israel found himself addicted to the opioid painkilers that he had been taking as prescribed by his doctor. Avi and Julie did everything they could think of to help their child, but to no avail. Michael took his own life as a result of his addiction.

Realizing how wide-spread this issue had become in WNY, Avi and Julie vowed to create change in the name their son, through partnership and education. Save the Michaels was born, with the determined purpose to educate, advocate and legislate for the many Michaels in our community.

The current opiate/opioid crisis has reached epidemic proportions nationwide, with a particularly destructive impact on Western New York. Each day, almost 7,000 Americans are treated in emergency rooms nationwide as a result of prescription painkillers. Nearly 50,000 drug overdose deaths were reported in 2013, with figures expected to increase dramatically in our current year. A recent report from the Center for Disease Control suggests that a great number of heroin users began their drug abuse using prescription medication such as oxycodone or hydrocodone,

Research suggests a multi-faceted community based approach is where the solution to this problem may rest. Partnering with schools, health organizations and legislatures, Save the Michaels of the World invites the WNY community to learn about the problem, and become part of the solution.
