Labatt Blue Buffalo Street Hockey Gears Up For Big Weekend Downtown

The Labatt Blue Buffalo Street Hockey Tournament is gearing up for what could be one of the most memorable outdoor winter events in recent history. In the dead of Buffalo winter, hundreds of street hockey players, and thousands of fans will take to the parking lots of Erie Basin Marina, Feb. 10-12 for three days of competitive, fun street hockey play. With live music from Kevin McCarthy and Scott Celani band, gaming tents, a chance to win a new Ford Focus, and plenty of Labatt Blue beer, the tournament has all the makings of an incredible outdoor winter experience, without the frigid temperatures. Best of all -- the event is free and open to the public.

“It’s the middle of winter in downtown Buffalo and we’re making the most of the mild temps,” said Brett Carlsen, associate brand manager of Labatt Blue. “Many people have asked if we’re disappointed with this year’s tournament. Do we wish we were on the ice? Of course. But that’s just not in the game plan this year. Instead, we’ll celebrate in true Labatt Blue style – watching some competitive street hockey, enjoying some cold ones with friends, and listening to some great music. We hope all of Western New York comes down to experience the atmosphere.”

Approximately 65 teams from around WNY are expected to play in the tournament. The tentative schedule is as follows:

  • Friday, Feb. 10: Hockey action under the lights- 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.; live music 5:30 p.m. - 10 p.m.
  • Saturday, Feb. 11: Hockey action and live music- 1 p.m. – 8 p.m.
  • Sunday, Feb. 12: Hockey action and Kevin McCarthy as dee-jay- 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.

In addition, fans can enjoy electronic Labatt Blue branded hockey nets, which can be set to various games, gockey, bubble hockey and box hockey games available throughout the tournament. Oversized TV screens also will be set up so players and fans can watch professional hockey taking place down the street. And, 10 lucky contestants will take their best shot to win a 2012 Ford Focus on Saturday around 4 p.m.

According to Carlsen, the drop-off in number of teams isn’t something tournament organizers are too concerned about. “Hockey on the frozen pond and on the street are two very different things – and they cater to different players. We have more than 65 teams who quickly assembled their rosters, and are really geared up to play Labatt Blue Buffalo Street Hockey. We can’t wait ‘til they get down to the Marina, sticks in hand, ready to go.

“This year’s tournament is anything but traditional, and that’s what makes it unique. From street hockey outdoors in the middle of February and nighttime hockey under the lights, to great music by local talent and tons of camaraderie… these are the things great events are made of,” Carlsen added. “We can never control the weather, but we know the Blue will be flowing, the sun will be shining, ok – might be shining, and we’ll be embracing the weekend for all its worth.”

Proceeds from all Labatt Blue beer sales benefit the Police Athletic League of Buffalo.
