Buffalo AmeriCorps On The Rebound: Community Service Without Abandonment!

Buffalo AmeriCorps and staff at The Belle Center can now rest a little easier after the decision to not fund Buffalo AmeriCorps for the upcoming 2010-11 fiscal year was overturned. After much advocacy, Buffalo AmeriCorps recently received a grant totaling $283,277 from the NYS Commission on National and Community Service.

The Buffalo AmeriCorps program has a major impact on the Western New York community as it provides vital resources towards socio-economic advancement for members in the community through service. Buffalo AmeriCorps has provided $206,000 in education awards over the past 3 years to members who have successfully completed their term of service.

Buffalo City Mission Receives Major Cost Saving Upgrade

New York State Sen. Antoine Thompson and representatives from Solar Liberty and the Buffalo City Mission “flipped the switch” today on a new solar energy system that provides a valuable source of electricity for the area’s largest homeless shelter.

The 204-panel rooftop system is expected to produce 53,600 kWh of electricity per year, approximately 16 percent of the building’s electrical usage. At current electrical rates, the system will save the Mission an estimated $6,700 in utility costs in its first year and is expected to increase each year if energy prices rise.

“Aside from the immediate cost savings, the City Mission is now a much greener building,” said Solar Liberty CEO Adam Rizzo.
