Furious Winds Slam Buffalo and Western New York

Furious Winds Slam Buffalo and Western New York

Yesterday's furious winds made for some dramatic photos down at Lasalle Park, in Buffalo. Waves pounded the breakwall sending water and mist soaring into air. Curious on-lookers armed with cameras and dressed in winter weather attire found it difficult to navigate through the howling winds, and bone chilling cold.

Red Cross Issues Tornado Readiness Guidelines

Red Cross Issues Tornado Readiness Guidelines

BUFFALO, N.Y., April 27, 2011, 4:32 P.M.  – The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for all of Western New York until 10 p.m., meaning tornadoes are possible in and near the watch area.  The American Red Cross is urging residents to review and discuss emergency plans, prepare emergency supply kits, and be ready to act quickly if a Tornado Warning is issued.

During any storm, residents should monitor radio and television news or a NOAA Weather Radio to stay informed about watches and warnings.  People should also be aware of the following tornado danger signs:

  • Dark, often greenish clouds
  • Wall cloud—an isolated lowering of the base of a thunderstorm
  • Cloud of debris
  • Large hail
  • Funnel cloud—a visible rotating extension of the cloud base
  • Roaring noise

The complete Red Cross Tornado Safety Checklist is here.

Should a tornado threaten or a Tornado Warning be issued, SEEK SHELTER IMMEDIATELY.  Do not wait until you see the tornado.  The safest place to be in a tornado is an underground shelter, basement, or safe room.  Following a tornado, stay out of damaged buildings, watch for fallen power lines or broken gas lines, and check for any injuries.

For more information on how to be Red Cross Ready for a possible tornado, please contact the American Red Cross, Greater Buffalo Chapter at (716) 886-7500, or visit www.buffaloredcross.org.

The Frizlen Group to Receive Award for West Side Restoration Project

The Frizlen Group to Receive Award for West Side Restoration Project

The Frizlen Group, a Buffalo-based architectural firm specializing in urban restoration projects, property development and green architecture, has been chosen to receive a 2011 Preservation Award from Preservation Buffalo Niagara. The award, for rehabilitation/adaptive use, recognizes The Frizlen Group’s restoration project at 257 Lafayette Ave. in Buffalo.

Now known as 257 Lafayette Center, the structure was originally built in 1928 and for decades served Buffalo’s West Side as Annunciation School and later Catholic Academy. The building sat vacant for four-plus years, until business partners Karl Frizlen of The Frizlen Group and contractor Paul Johnson of Johnson & Sons transformed it into a mixed-use building housing 20 occupied apartments and several businesses.

The award will be presented at the annual Preservation Buffalo Niagara luncheon to be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Does each gesture really make a difference? Can music and dance be weapons of peace? In 2003, on the eve of the Iraq war, director Iara Lee embarked on a journey to better understand a world increasingly embroiled in conflict and, as she saw it, heading for self-destruction. After several years, travelling over five continents, Iara encountered growing numbers of people who committed their lives to promoting change. This is their story. CULTURES OF RESISTANCE explores how art and creativity can be ammunition in the battle for peace and justice.

Iara Lee, a Brazilian of Korean descent, is an activist, filmmaker, and founder of the Caipirinha Foundation, which supports projects to secure peace with justice.
