Catholic Health Free Program for Alzheimer's Caregivers

Catholic Health Home Care is sponsoring a free Community Health Education Program for health professionals, family members, and caregivers of loved ones with Alzheimer’s or other dementia related conditions, entitled, Becoming an Alzheimer’s Whisperer: Gentle and Loving Management of Challenging Behaviors,” on Tuesday, March 8 from 6-7:30 pm at the OLV Senior Neighborhood Community Room located at 55 Melroy Avenue in Lackawanna.

Verna Benner Carson, PhD, a nationally recognized author and guest lecturer on behavioral health and Alzheimer’s care, will be the featured speaker. A clinical nurse specialist in psychiatric/mental health nursing and associate professor at Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Carson is best known for her work on the unique needs of the Alzheimer’s patient and a program she developed entitled, “Becoming an Alzheimer’s Whisperer.”

This award winning program provides information and techniques to help caregivers calm the fears of the person caught up in this terrible disease and to courageously enter the Alzheimer’s patient’s world to heal their broken spirits. According to Dr. Benner Carson, some people are naturally gifted at doing this. Through gentle and loving communication, they know how to diffuse agitation before it explodes, how to find joy and humor in the role of caregiver, and how to allow the person with Alzheimer’s to continue to experience joy and humor.

The Alzheimer’s Whisperer program was recognized with a Best Practices in Dementia Care Award by the American Psychiatric Nurses Association in 2005. Dr. Benner Carson has trained thousands of senior care providers and family caregivers on “Becoming an Alzheimer’s Whisperer.”

This program is free and open to all. Nursing professionals attending the program can earn 1.5 CEUs. For more information, or to register for this program, call Catholic Health’s HealthConnection at 447-6205 or visit us online at chsbuffalo.org/events.
