Something New and Delicious: Argentinian Flat Bread

Faina (pronounced "fah-ee-NAH") is a yummy flat bread made of chickpea flour. It's commonly eaten in South American countries like Argentina and Uruguay, but I've traced its origins to Italy somehow... I don't know, I'm not a food historian. What I am is someone who loves trying new exciting foods, and if they also happen to be good for you, then it's bonus time! 

Faina is really easy to make. It's made from chickpea (garbanzo bean) flour, so it's a low carb, high fiber, heart healthy, and really tasty alternative to your regular pizza crust or cracker. Is it vegan? Easily. Is it gluten-free? You betcha. Is it absolutely delectable? Of course! I wouldn't share it with you if it wasn't. 

Treat it just as you would a pizza crust, or cut it into small squares and top with cheese or guacamole, and you got yourself a healthy snack. The options are endless, so I'm gonna show you the basic recipe and let you explore your own possibilities. Feel free to share what you discover!

For the Love of Faina!

2 1/2 cups Garbanzo Bean Flour (aka Chickpea Flour). You can find it in the health food section.

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp garlic powder

generous sprinkling of pepper

dash of oregano

3 tbsp oil 

1 3/4 cups of water

1/4 cup flax seed meal (optional). It adds texture and some much needed omega-3s.

2 tbsp shredded Parmesan cheese (optional)

and any other spices you fancy... I like a bit of cumin and coriander, or some chili powder might be good too. Oooh, or rosemary and thyme... but I digress. 

Whisk everything together in a large bowl and let stand for 30-45 minutes. It should look like thick pancake batter. If it's too thick to pour, add 1/4 cup of water and stir. Preheat your oven to 450. Yes, 450. Don't be scared. Pour 2-3 tbsp of oil in a large metal baking pan and stick it in the oven to heat up (don't use glass or Pyrex... it may crack on you). Once the pan is good and hot, move it around to grease it up with the hot oil, then pour the mixture into it and let it bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the edges are nice and golden. 

Top with pizza toppings and bake until cheese is melted. Or let it cool and cut it up to add different toppings. It should keep for a few days in an airtight container, just like bread. Enjoy!
