Chinese Delegation Visits the Buffalo Public Schools

On Friday April 29, 2011, a delegation from China visited the Buffalo Public Schools. The group included seven educators from China, led by Dr. Zhou Nanzhao, a University at Buffalo Alumni, who currently serves as the President of UNESCO Asia Pacific Network for International Education and is also the Director of the International Center for Teacher Education at East China Normal University.

“Our primary objective in cultivating this relationship,” according to Superintendent James A. Williams, “is to forge and solidify plans for sustained educational and international partnership exchanges between schools in China and our schools.”

The Buffalo Infringement Festival (BIF) is an 11-day long multi-genre arts festival in Buffalo, NY.

It is free for all artists to participate, everyone is accepted and artists keep 100% of the profits from their projects and performances. The art that is typically Under the Radar is exemplified.

The Buffalo Infringement Festival is a non-profit-driven, non-hierarchical grassroots endeavor bringing together a broad range of eclectic, independent, experimental, and controversial art of all forms. Visual, performing, musical, and media arts are all welcome here. Taking place in multiple venues in and around Buffalo’s Allentown District, the festival is an annual eleven-day event running from the last weekend of July through the first weekend of August.

Buffalo Public Schools Summer Music Camp Opens Registration

Sign up before May 27th for music camp this summer, in band, chorus and orchestra.  Camp runs from August 8th to 12th at the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts, and registration is open for students in grades 5 - 9, who have at least one school year of prior instrumental music experience in woodwind, brass, percussion, strings and vocals.

All music teachers will have applications to hand out to students, or you can print the one attached here. Students will participate in instrumental lessons, rehearsals, concert, sports, games, and visual arts with top quality teaching staff.  Transportation is available and meals are included, as well as the use of musical instruments.

Please act now, as enrollment will not be accepted after the 27th.

New PLA School Plans Rolled Out For Board Approval

At today's Buffalo Board of Education meeting, Superintendent James A. Williams rolled out the latest set of plans meant to turn around state-designated Persistently Lowest Achieving Schools.

The last set of plans was shown to the board on April 13th, the same day that the Joint Intervention Team Reviews were received by the district.

Performing Arts School Presents Dance and Still Art

The Buffalo Academy of Visual and Performing Arts will present their Spring Dance Celebration performance in the Mainstage Theater at 450 Masten Avenue on Friday, April 29th, at 7PM, and Saturday, April 30th, at 2PM.

There will also be a school-time matinee performance on Friday, April 29th at 9:40AM.

Tickets are $6.00 for adults and $3.00 for students and senior citizens.
 
The dance performance will be preceded by on Art Show and Reception featuring the artwork of the 9th and 10th-grade visual art majors in the school's art gallery on Friday, April 29th, from 6 to 7PM.

TOY Book Club Meets to Discuss "How I Become a Pirate"

TOY’s Book Club members will be discussing the book and playing related activities on May 7th at Talking Leaves Books on Main Street.  Members of the book club must pre-register via email to bookclub@theatreofyouth.org with their name, age, phone number and the name of the adult who will be accompanying them.

Members then receive a voucher for 15% off their order of the book How I Became a Pirate from either Talking Leaves locations.  The meeting of the Theatre of Youth Book Club will be held at Talking Leaves, 3158 Main Street on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 1pm.  Refreshments will be served. Pirates are Invading Allentown and Staying for Brunch!

Theatre of Youth proudly opens How I Became a Pirate on Friday, May 13th, 2011 at 7:00pm and runs Saturdays and Sundays (5/14, 5/15, 5/21, 5/22) at 2:00 pm.  Young Jeremy Jacobs and his exceptional digging skills are recruited by Captain Braid Beard for treasure burying purposes.
