West Side Neighborhood Housing Services, Congressman Higgins Announce $68,150 from NeighborWorks Ame

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) and West Side Neighborhood Services announce help for Western New York, through a $68,150 grant from NeighborWorks® America, at a time when communities are taking early steps back from the housing crisis and jobs need to be created most.   This flexible funding source will help West Side Neighborhood Housing Services in a variety of ways, including providing key service delivery funds for homebuyer education, owner-occupied rehabilitation, foreclosure prevention and community building programs.

West Side Neighborhood Housing Services’ Executive Director, Linda Chiarenza, says these flexible funds are vital as Buffalo communities face increasing needs and decreasing funding.

Catholic Health Free Program for Alzheimer's Caregivers

Catholic Health Home Care is sponsoring a free Community Health Education Program for health professionals, family members, and caregivers of loved ones with Alzheimer’s or other dementia related conditions, entitled, Becoming an Alzheimer’s Whisperer: Gentle and Loving Management of Challenging Behaviors,” on Tuesday, March 8 from 6-7:30 pm at the OLV Senior Neighborhood Community Room located at 55 Melroy Avenue in Lackawanna.

Verna Benner Carson, PhD, a nationally recognized author and guest lecturer on behavioral health and Alzheimer’s care, will be the featured speaker. A clinical nurse specialist in psychiatric/mental health nursing and associate professor at Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Carson is best known for her work on the unique needs of the Alzheimer’s patient and a program she developed entitled, “Becoming an Alzheimer’s Whisperer.”

ECMC Opens Unique Wound Care Center

Representatives from Erie County Medical Center, dedicated a Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center Thursday that will speed healing for trauma, surgical, diabetes and other slow-healing wounds in a unique facility for Western New York with six surgeons and three podiatrists.

Nearly 24 million people, 8 percent of the American population, have diabetes and 15 percent of those with the disease will develop chronic wounds.

The ECMC Wound Center, which the hospital built in response to closure and consolidation of  facilities at Millard Fillmore Gates Circle and ECMC, is a new, state-of-the-art facility with two hyperbaric chambers. It exists to help wound patients before ulcers and injuries lead to amputations.

BUFFALO, NY – The Buffalo Bisons are once again hosting their annual Family Day Open House on Saturday, March 5 from 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm at Coca-Cola Field.

Free to the public, this event offers fans of all ages a chance to feed their off-season blues by treating themselves to a free Tyson hot dog, ice cream from Upstate Farms, and a chance to test their skills in the Bisons Batting Cages and Radar Gun, and so much more.

Fans will also be able to purchase a ticket to the Bisons game on Saturday, April 9 or Sunday, April 10 for only a $5 donation to Western New York United Against Drug & Alcohol Abuse

Doors open at 11:00 am for Bisons Season Ticket Holders and will open to the general public at 12:00 pm.

Celebrate Carnaval at the Buffalo Zoo!

BUFFALO, NY—Join the animal keepers of M&T Bank Rainforest Falls on Saturday, February 26 from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. for a very special celebration!

Carnaval will showcase the animals of the Venezuelan rainforest, as well as the culture and history of Venezuela. Event activities include animal enrichment and keeper talks, coloring and mask making crafts.

All event activities are free with Zoo admission and take place inside the Zoo’s M&T Bank Rainforest Falls exhibit.

2011 March for Babies is Kicking off at the Buffalo Zoo February 24

March of Dimes is kicking off its annual March for Babies fundraiser Thursday, February 24 at the Buffalo Zoo. The event is one of the organizations most popular and raises over $200,000 annually.

The event starts at 6:00 PM at The Buffalo Zoo Children's Resource Center, 300 Parkside Drive in Buffalo. The event draws out over 1,500 walkers in support of the cause.

Nearly 600 babies are born premature every week in New York alone. The March of Dimes helps mothers with newborns, healthy and premature, and gives them all the tools they need to keep babies healthy.

Elmwood Village Association to Host Family Skate Day

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Elmwood Village Association is pleased to present Family Skate Day for all Elmwood Village Association members and guests on Sunday, February 27th, 2011 from 1:00pm - 2:50pm at the Buffalo State Ice Arena!

The Elmwood Village Association will cover the cost of skating for the first 160 Elmwood Village Association members that attend. Not a current member of the Elmwood Village Association? You can become a member during the event and receive free ice time for you and your family compliments of the Elmwood Village!

Each participant must provide their own skates and sign a legal release in order to participate. Skates may be rented at the Buffalo State College Ice Arena during the event.  Skate rental fees are $2 for adults and $1 for children.
