As one of America’s most anticipated and celebrated sporting events, the Super Bowl brings together families, friends and fans each year to enjoy the excitement of the big game. In many instances, fans will gather to watch the game at sports bars, restaurants or Super Bowl-themed parties. The Resource Training Center in Amherst, provider of the Drinking Driver Program, wants to spread an important safety message about designating a sober driver on Super Bowl Sunday.

The Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market Board of Directors is holding its fourth annual poster contest to promote the outdoor market’s 2014 season. Entries for the poster competition are due by 5 p.m. Friday, March 7. Whether you’re a student studying the arts, a professional graphic designer or just someone with a creative streak, you’re invited to submit your design for an 11x17-inch color poster that accurately reflects the feel of the Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market.

The popular Winter Market at Horsefeathers will continue its successful run on Saturday, Jan. 25. The indoor market is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays through May 3 and occupies portions of the first floor and lower level of the Horsefeathers Market & Residences, located at 346 Connecticut St. on Buffalo’s West Side. 

Community Beer Works, Buffalo’s first nanobrewery, is the newest vendor to join the market. Providing musical entertainment will be singer/guitarist Don Z.

HEALTHeLINK issues final report on three-year Beacon Community project

Marking the completion of its three-year Beacon Community project, HEALTHeLINK today launched an online report (www.wnybeacon.com) highlighting the documented improvement in quality of care and outcomes for diabetic patients and improved provider communication and care coordination through the use of health information technology.

The Beacon Community project was a collaboration among HEALTHeLINK, Catholic Medical Partners, P2 Collaborative of Western New York, and more than 40 other health care organizations.  The Western New York (WNY) Beacon was one of 17 Beacon Communities nationwide and was funded by a $16.1 million grant through the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC). It was tasked with building and strengthening local health IT infrastructure and testing innovative approaches to make measurable improvements in health, care, and cost over a three-year period.

Press Raw Food & Juice, a specialty store for individuals interested in raw vegan and healthy food choices, will be the latest business to join the Grant Street revitalization when it opens for business on Thursday, Dec. 19. The food retailer and take-out shop is located at 197 Grant St. on Buffalo’s West Side.

“Press specializes in organic cold-pressed juices and raw organic foods,” said owner and executive chef Esther Pica. “We are, I think, the first in Buffalo to offer an entirely raw, vegan, organic and gluten-free menu. We’re sure that the demand is here.”

Local organization has been at forefront of reform efforts

 

Catholic Medical Partners, a network of more than 900 local physicians, Catholic Health and Mount St. Mary’s Hospital, was recently recognized for its leadership in the adoption, implementation and use of health information technology, receiving the PATH Award from the New York eHealth Collaborative (NYeC). The award was presented at the Digital Health Conference in New York City.
