The Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market, a Western New York tradition featuring more than 30 vendors selling fresh, seasonal and local products, is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday, rain or shine. Providing the entertainment at the open-air venue this week will be violinists David Adamczyk from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and Griffin Saiia from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Returning to the market for the first time in 2011 is everyone’s favorite attraction, the Alpaca Play Pen!

The market also welcomes several community groups this week, including the Buffalo Animal Shelter, GrowWNY.org and the Tapestry Charter School. Arrowhead Spring Vineyards will offer wine-tasting.

Kaleida Health, Unions Agree to Second Contract Extension

From a Statement Released By Kaleida Health:

BUFFALO, N.Y.  – Kaleida Health and the Communications Workers of America (CWA 1168), the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE 17) and 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East have extended their existing contract agreements for another ten days until June 27, 2011.

With assistance from a Federal mediator, the parties continue making progress on reaching a new Master Bargaining Agreement, which covers more than 8,000 unionized Kaleida Health employees.

The original Master Bargaining Agreement between Kaleida Health and the unions expired on May 31, 2011.  The parties then agreed to extend the contract through midnight, June 17, 2011.

University Community Farmers Market

The University Community Farmers Market (UCFM) is now in its fifth season and is open every Saturday, from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. through October 15, 2011. The market is located on the University at Buffalo’s South Campus – Main Street at Kenmore Avenue.

This year’s market features vendors selling fresh produce and artisan products. Special events with a focus on nutrition, wellness and gardening are scheduled for the third Saturday of each month. The schedule through July is as follows:

July 16th – Garden Extravaganza – in conjunction with the 10th Annual Samuel P. Capen Garden Walk

UB Celebrates Excellence in Postdoctoral Research at 2011 Postdoc Research Symposium

BUFFALO, NY- The University at Buffalo's postdoctoral scholars and their contributions to research on campus will be celebrated June 7 from 2-6 p.m. in the Center for Tomorrow on the North Campus as part of UB's 2011 Postdoc Research Symposium sponsored by the UB Office of Postdoctoral Scholars.

"The symposium was established to allow postdoctoral scholars at UB to present and share their research with each other and to network with other postdoctoral scholars from around the university," says Marilyn E. Morris, associate dean for graduate and postdoctoral education in the UB Graduate School and professor of pharmaceutical sciences in the UB School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
