Community Health Foundation of Western & Central NY Awards $300,000 in Grants to Reduce Falls

The Community Health Foundation of Western and Central New York announced today that it is investing an additional $300,000 to expand the work of its Fall Prevention Collaborative. The new funding will be used to support the development of new community coalitions and initiatives throughout Western and Central New York.  Since 2007, the Foundation has invested more than $600,000 in grants and related projects to reduce or eliminate the risks associated with falls.  According to the New York State Department of Health, falls account for approximately $1.7 billion in annual hospitalization costs.

Dr. Peter Gambacorta Appointed Medical Director, Pediatric & Adolescent Sports Medicine

Peter L. Gambacorta, D.O., has been appointed Medical Director, Pediatric & Adolescent Sports Medicine, Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo.

A native of Western New York, Dr. Gambacorta graduated cum laude from SUNY at Buffalo, during which he received a Bachelor of Arts degree. He subsequently earned his Master of Science degree at Roswell Park Cancer Institute from SUNY at Buffalo. Dr. Gambacorta earned his Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and his internship and orthopedic surgery residency training at South Pointe Hospital, Cleveland Clinic Healthcare System.

Local Fitness Instructor Named Ambassador to Sports Legacy Institute

Primordial Strength Inc. President Steven Helmicki of East Aurora was recently named a Sports Legacy Institute Ambassador. The mission of the Sports Legacy Institute is to advance the study, treatment and prevention of the effects of brain trauma in athletes and other at-risk groups. SLI was founded in 2007 to “Solve the Sports Concussion Crisis,” and in 2009, SLI launched programs to also serve military veterans. 

SLI is primarily focused on the study of the degenerative brain disease Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE, a condition caused by repetitive concussive and sub-concussive brain injuries. Helmicki contributes by communicating the Institute’s message locally and continues to advance neck and trap training that aids in the mission. 

Local Fitness Expert Creates New Training Program for U.S. Marines

East Aurora resident Steven Helmicki, president of Primordial Strength Inc., was contacted by trainers from the U.S. Marine Corp. base in Camp Lejune over the summer to consult on new training methods. After contributing with Noreen Kuhn on the Semper Fit presentation titled “Uncommon Training with Common Movements,” next came a week-long mentoring program that ran daily from 6 a.m. until the dead of the night. 

Don't Miss the Independent Health 'Fitness for Kids' Cheer Challenge on Sunday

Come watch these exciting high school and all star cheer teams tumble, perform stunts, cheer and dance in the Independent Health Foundation’s Fitness for Kids Cheer Challenge. All proceeds benefit the Fitness for Kids Challenge program.     

The Fitness for Kids Challenge, which runs through April 30, 2010, encourages children age 12 and under to complete health and fitness activities. In the first two years of the Challenge, more than 200,000 fitness activities have been completed, 100,000 youth have been reached in approximately 200 schools throughout Western New York and 25,000 activity trackers have been submitted.

The event includes a special performance by Buffalo Envy All Stars.

Competition begins at 10 a.m.

Primordial Strength to Offer Concussion Reduction Seminar to Area Athletes

Sports-related concussions have been all over the news lately, thanks in large part to some serious injuries that have occurred in recent NFL and NHL games.

From 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, December 11, Primordial Strength Inc. — a leader in neck and trapezius training and the anti-concussion movement — will conduct a Concussion Reduction Seminar through Neck and Trap Training at the Lancaster Elks Lodge, 33 Legion Parkway. The cost is $40, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the annual Trench Trophy award event. The trophy is presented annually to Western New York’s high school “Lineman of the Year.”
