The Eighth Annual "Working Towards a Day Without Pain" Gala

The Eighth Annual "Working Towards a Day Without Pain" Gala took place this past weekend on October 23rd in Buffalo at the Downtown Hyatt Regency. The Gala funds vital research involving Chiari Malformation, Syringomyelia, Neuropathic Pain, Spinal Cord Injuries, and related disorders. This beautiful event is organized by the Kane Family out of West Seneca, Co-founders of The Column of Hope.

Previous Galas have funded research that produced three major publications in neurosurgery journals. The latest research is the first Chiari study in Buffalo, funded by the Column of Hope, which began in September of this year. This is very exciting news that a study which began with Australian researcher Dr. Marcus Stoodley will finish up at Dent Neurological Institute under the supervision of Local Neurosurgeon Dr. Lee Guterman.

Local Powerlifter is Training Other Athletes to Win

In his early teens, Steve Helmicki considered himself a bit of an undersized football player, which led him to begin training in his parents’ attic with a DP vinyl and sand weight set and a Bill Grant fitness manual. While countless other young athletes might have a similar story to tell, very few — if any — have ever taken it quite as far as Helmicki.

His passion for fitness and weightlifting would eventually lead him to national and world powerlifting titles and even some world records. In fact, he’s built a weightlifting resume that goes beyond being impressive. Statistically, he is among the all-time greats in a sport that doesn’t get a tremendous amount of exposure. If it did, he’d almost certainly be a household name by now.
