500 Block of Main St. now on track to open to cars next week

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown's office says vehicular traffic is now scheduled to return to the 500 Block of Main Street either late this week or, more likely, early next week.

There have been several delays that have pushed that date back from September to October, then November to December.

"We're kind of at that point where we're wondering whether it will ever actually happen," said Joseph Incao, owner of Furnishings, the most recent retail store on the block. "We don't know what the hold-ups are."

Mayor Brown's spokesperson said the safety hazard check has been completed by the NFTA. The management liability agreement has been signed by the city but not yet the NFTA. And final inspections are now taking place. All of the needed work should wrap up in time for a ceremonial opening early next week.

"We really look forward to it and hope that whoever is holding the button from giving the green light for cars to come down releases that button and lets people travel," Incao said.

If you haven't seen the 500 Block lately, it has undergone an amazing transformation, with new streetscaping and other infrastructure, new businesses and new optimism. You can see a 360° view of the block by clicking on this link.
