Harbor Development Officials Look To Light Up Skyway
News

BUFFALO, NY - It has been called an eyesore, a roadblock to waterfront access and many have called for it to be torn down. Now developers are hoping you'll soon see the Skyway in a new "light".

As part of the on-going efforts to recreate our inner harbor, the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation Monday night, with no announcement nor fanfare, tested out a splash of colorful lights on the underside of the highway.

As the lights came on, the pilings were splashed in a revolving palette of blue, green, yellow, red and orange. ECHDC President Tom Dee says it was just a first run and he was happy with it, but there is still quite a bit of tweaking to be done. In the coming weeks they will make adjustments to the timing, the placement, possibly even the type of lighting.

They plan on having the new look up and running for this summer, and have it as a precursor to an animated lighting system on the grain elevators that dot the riverfront.

The light installations would be patterned after a breath-taking display put on in Quebec City, Canada to celebrate that city's 400th birthday.
