BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Erie County Sheriff's Office is investigating an attempted suicide that left an inmate in critical condition.
Undersheriff Mark Wipperman says Edward Berezowski, 54, of Williamsville, who allegedly attacked and choked an employee at the Transit Road Best Buy in Clarence Saturday, was found hanging in his cell by his jail-issued pants Sunday afternoon.
The sheriff's office says Berezowski had told deputies less than ten minutes earlier that he was going to his cell to take a nap.
The sheriff's office says deputies cut Berezowski down and performed CPR. First responders took him to Buffalo General Hospital in critical condition.
Investigators are now looking into the incident to make sure deputies followed proper procedure.
Berezowski has not yet been arraigned on charges in the Best Buy incident, which include criminal obstruction of breathing, harassment, and disorderly conduct.
