Roswell, Children's Hospital Announce New Cancer Unit | News
BUFFALO, NY - A big step was announced Thursday in the ongoing fight to enhance the quality of care for kids with cancer.
Women and Children's Hospital and Roswell Park will join forces to build a doctor-led unified pediatric hematoloty-oncology program in the new John R. Oishei Children's Hospital.
Over the past 40 years, the two healthcare systems have operated separate and complementary pediatric cancer services. The plan is to offer a single center of excellence for inpatient/outpatient services at the new hospital in the city's medical corridor.
"Each institution contributes unique expertise and services to children and young adults with cancer and blood disorders such as sickle cell disease, hemophilia and anemia," said Martin Brecher, MD, Chair of Pediatrics at Roswell, Chief of Hematoloty Oncology at Children's and Chief of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology in the Department of Pediatrics at UB. "The new hospital presents a great opportunity to develop a true pediatric Center of Excellence."
The new center will include inpatient beds, an outpatient clinic, isolation beds for blood and bone marrow transplant/high-dose therapy patients and infusion facilities for chemotherapy and blood products, all in a protected environment on the top floor of the new hospital.
