Catholic Charities, Partners Embark on Caregiver Initiative Designed to Cover Seven Counties

Catholic Charities of Buffalo and its eight partners are mobilizing for a January 1 start for the comprehensive Alzheimer’s Disease Caregiver Support Initiative, the result of a $7.5 million award announced recently by New York State Governor Andrew M. Cuomo.

Through the five-year grant, a focused, collaborative service network is being developed to support and impact caregivers of loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia across seven counties in Western New York.  The goal is to expand the safety net for caregivers by recognizing and addressing the need for supports and stress reduction strategies.

Dog Ears Bookstore to Welcome Tim Joyce on December 7

South Buffalo native Tim Joyce has been writing professionally for more than 25 years, with three humor books, an Intro to Theatre textbook, five plays and several poems published during that time. Joyce has also been his own chief writer during a successful stand-up comedy career of nearly 30 years. And from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, he’ll be at Dog Ears Bookstore & Café, 688 Abbott Road, Buffalo, to sign copies of his first solo book of poetry titled “Small Angels.”

“Small Angels” is published by South Buffalo’s own Buck Mulligan Press, and the price will be $5 per copy with an autograph if desired. The entire bookstore will be open with its excellent selection of publications, including an extensive children’s book section.

New Book Features the Best of Newspaper Columnist Phil Ranallo; Two Signings Planned

Paul Ranallo, son of the late newspaper columnist Phil Ranallo, will hold two book-signing events Dec. 4 and 5 during the annual Hertel Holidays. Ranallo’s very first signing will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, at The Pasta Peddler/Blackbird Sweets, 1547 Hertel Ave., Buffalo. The second signing is scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at North Park Theatre, 1428 Hertel Ave.

Ranallo’s book, “What’s New, Harry? The Best of Buffalo Courier-Express Columnist Phil Ranallo,” features more than 100 of Phil Ranallo’s greatest columns originally written during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. The columns cover a variety of public figures — from Ralph Wilson, Tim Horton and Jack Kemp to Muhammad Ali, Jesse Owens and Martin Luther King — in addition to historic moments in American history. Each story, according to the author, is like opening a long-lost time capsule.

No Frills to release ‘When the Lights Go Out’ by Michael Farrell on November 10

 

A barroom guitarist strumming between two lives. A faded bluesman drunk on his own legend. A rock pianist who responds to a higher calling. These compelling characters clash to drive the drama of author Michael Farrell’s second Buffalo-set novel, “When the Lights Go Out,” set for release by No Frills Buffalo on Nov. 10.

Farrell — whose debut novel “Running with Buffalo” was released in 2007 — returns to introduce readers to local musician Johnny “Nighthawk” Nolan, a downtown Buffalo favorite who spent his evenings exhaling covers and originals, all while basking in the adulation of devoted revelers. To Nolan, those nights under the lights meant everything — until he needed to walk away.

Catholic Charities Multisystemic Therapy Presents Award to Niagara County Social Services Director

Catholic Charities of Buffalo Multisystemic Therapy (MST) program supervisors in Niagara County recently honored Burt Marshall, director of Niagara County Social Services, with an international award for his support of MST for more than 15 years.

Marshall was recognized as the All Star in the Champion category by MST Services, an international organization that strives to keep troubled juveniles from being placed outside of the home. He had previously received the Whatever it Takes award earlier in 2015, and was chosen from other Whatever it Takes winners this year to be presented the All Star award. Marshall is now eligible to win the annual Whatever it Takes award.

“Burt oversees the MST contract in Niagara County, and has been a large supporter and advocate of the program,” said Marie Andersen-Strait, coordinator of Catholic Charities’ MST program. “He was also a big part of bringing MST into Niagara County.”

AT&T, United Way of Buffalo & Erie County, University at Buffalo, dig Buffalo, InfoTech WNY and Buffalo Open Data partner to host a civic hackathon challenging teams to create innovative software and/or hardware solutions that will serve the community

 WNY Civic Hackathon powered by AT&T, the first ever daylong hackathon dedicated to solving local civic issues in the region, will challenge teams to face off to deliver the best civic technological solution in a 13 hour period for the following local issues; Housing/Property Blight, Transportation, and Advocacy/Public Policy. Cash prizes totaling $3,500 will be awarded, with a grand prize of $2,000, followed by a second place prize of $1,000 and $500 for third place.

Catholic Charities of Buffalo Appoints Donor and Event Coordinator

Catholic Charities of Buffalo has appointed Frank Andzik as Donor and Event Coordinator under its Appeal Department, which oversees the agency’s annual multi-million dollar fundraising campaign.

As donor and event coordinator, Andzik will serve as liaison to several key constituencies including the Appeal leadership team, Appeal Community Division, Catholic Relief Services, and Catholic Campaign for Human Development through various verbal and written communications, including presentations, letters, memos and required reports.

He will also oversee solicitation meetings and donor recognition events, as well as assist the Appeal Advancement Director in scheduling and prospect research of Major and Planned Gift prospects.

Andzik most recently was Director of Special Events, Public Relations and Development for Autism Services, Inc. before joining Catholic Charities. He holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Canisius College.
