Congressman Higgins' Office to Hold Special 'Congress on Your Corner' Event for Veterans

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) announced a special Congress on Your Corner event in July designed to address the needs of local veterans.  The Congress on Your Corner program provides local residents with access to the Congressman’s office through satellite office hours at locations in the district.

“The men and women that selflessly serve this nation are often faced with unique circumstances and accessing available services can be a frustrating process,” said Congressman Higgins.  “This event is designed to help veterans cut through the red tape by bringing people who can help directly to a location that is convenient and accessible.”

Below are the details on the special Veterans outreach event:

Southtowns Catholic School Student Runs Half Marathon, Raises $600 for Catholic Charities Appeal

Southtowns Catholic School Student Runs Half Marathon, Raises $600 for Catholic Charities Appeal

BUFFALO, N.Y., June 22, 2011 – In a display of hard work and philanthropy, Alexandra Chambers, a seventh-grade student at Southtowns Catholic School in Lakeview, raised $619 for the 2011 Catholic Charities Appeal through sponsorships by running the Buffalo Half Marathon May 29 as part of a service project for the National Junior Honor Society.

After deciding to complete her project for charity and consulting with School Principal Judith MacDonald, Alexandra researched various organizations as potential recipients of her donation, and ultimately chose Catholic Charities after “hearing about it the most” at school.

She trained for the race for about four months by alternating between three- and five-mile runs, and was able to finish the 13.9-mile race in about two hours. In fact, she finished 14th of 69 female runners in the 19 and under age group.
