A Statement Released by Congressman Brian Higgins' Office

Window for Local First Responders to Apply Opens Today

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) announced that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will be accepting applications for Fiscal Year (FY) 2011 Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (SAFER) grants starting on January 30, 2012. SAFER grants assist local fire departments with staffing and deployment capabilities to ensure that communities have adequate protection from fire and fire-related hazards.

“Western New York fire companies have benefitted greatly from SAFER grant funding in years past,” said Congressman Higgins. “I strongly encourage local fire companies to submit applications this year for assistance with recruitment and retention of first responders.”

Pastor Pridgen Inspires BASCS Students

Pastor and City of Buffalo Council Member Darius Pridgen spoke to students at the Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School on Thursday, January 12, with the message that successful leaders build strong relationships.

Pastor Pridgen pointed out that when people build strong relationships they are connected, and this will be the key to their success. “You’re never going to work alone even if you are the owner of a business," said Pridgen. “You’re always going to be connected.”

The pastor spoke as part of the school's leadership speaker series.

William Street Post Office Should Remain Open for the People of Buffalo

William Street Post Office Should Remain Open for the People of Buffalo

I have closely followed the ongoing debate about whether or not to shut down mail processing at the William Street post office and transfer processing operations to Rochester. As many of you know, the United States Postal Service (USPS) has been conducting a study about this proposal, and I have a number of concerns about their work. I believe the USPS study has been hastily conducted and agree with the Postal Regulatory Commission that the study lacks proper analysis. Over 700 employees would be displaced if the William Street post office closed. These employees, and the residents of Buffalo, deserve a thorough, careful and credible analysis by the USPS.

On October 4th, I joined Rep. Higgins in writing a letter to the Postmaster General to oppose the proposed closing. I continue to believe that both the Buffalo and Rochester post offices should remain open, and provide jobs and vital services to the people and businesses of Western New York.
