Congressman Applauds End to Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell but Cites WNY Bullying Incident As Reminder that “Our Work Is Not Done”

Today, Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-27) spoke on the Floor of the House of Representatives in support of the continued fight against discrimination in America.  In his remarks, the Congressman celebrated the end of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, but cited the recent tragic incident in which a teen from the Western New York community took his own life as a result of bullying as further evidence that more must be done.

Below is the text of Congressman Higgins remarks:

Mr. Speaker,

I am proud to come before this body today to celebrate the end of the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

9/11: This Is Nothing New

9/11: This Is Nothing New

9/11: This Is Nothing New

by Susan Marie

My phone rang. I were told to turn on the TV. I stared in abject horror at the screen as a plane flew directly into the 2nd tower of The World Trade Center. I thought: How is this possible in America, let alone New York City, the most populous city in the U.S, the largest metropolitan area in the world?

All I knew is that people were dying.

After 9/11, every available person volunteered to assist NYC ranging from the health care field, firefighters, police force, and everyday people. The attitude in America was one of solidarity. No one fought about religion and politics. Diversity in race, financial status or sexual gender was not an issue. People stood together.  Not apart.

What followed as a result, was and still is, global mass hysteria.

  • Washington D.C., Feb.1 ---- This in substance was the prompt and cheerful response of the President of the United States, the one man in all this great country who can do most to help the Pan American Exposition, as he replied to the explanatory addresses of the members of the committee who called on him yesterday afternoon.  And it was evident from his tone and manner that President McKinley meant every word he said, and that in him the exposition will have a warm friend and a valuable helper.

WNY Reps Announce Nearly Half-Million Dollars in Funding for NFTA

WESTERN NEW YORK – Today, Western New York Representatives Kathy Hochul (NY-26), Brian Higgins (NY-27) and Louise Slaughter (NY-28) announced that the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) has received a Transit Security Grant of $455,766.

"After meeting with NFTA officials today, I was able to see firsthand how crucial the proper funds are to protecting our passengers, keeping our transportation infrastructure safe, but also creating the jobs that will get Western New Yorkers back to work" said Congresswoman Hochul.  “As a Member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, I am on the front lines of our nation's security; learning about the grave threats to our public transportation system each and every day.  The grant received by the NFTA this week will ensure our public's ground transportation will have the proper security in place for large events, as well as boost our economy by investing in Western New York jobs.”
