Lagerhaus 95 Brings Good Food and Beer to the Arena District

Lagerhaus 95 Brings Good Food and Beer to the Arena District

If you are planning on going to an event at First Niagara Center, there is unfortunately a lack of good dining options within walking distance.  On top of that, the restaurants that we do enjoy (Swannie House, WJ Morrisey’s) are usually insanely packed in the time leading up to any event.  So when we first heard about Lagerhaus 95 and their gastro-pub style menu was opening right off Cobblestone on Perry St, we were pretty excited.  Everyone knows there are plenty of good restaurants in Allentown, North Buffalo and the Elmwood Village, but in this area of downtown Buffalo there is definitely a lack of quality.

Kung Food is a Welcome Addition to Main Street

Kung Food is a Welcome Addition to Main Street

Last weekend some friends and I went out to lunch on a mission for some fried chicken.  We originally were planning on going to Nette’s Fried Chicken but unfortunately they were closed, so we had to make a change of plans at the last minute.  So after a quick audible, we went down the street to the newly opened Kung Food (in-between Shango and Ming Cafe), a Japanese/Thai restaurant that’s also serving Bubble Tea.  We walked into the cafe on a Sunday afternoon and found a nice sized crowd.  The owner greeted us immediately and was very friendly throughout our entire meal.  They were excited to see some new faces and were excited to talk about their new restaurant and what they are trying to offer to the downtown area.  They also offered a $1 discount for our orders if we

Elm Street Bakery is Worth the Drive

Elm Street Bakery is Worth the Drive

Alli and I really really love East Aurora….there I said it.  As city residents there’s an unnecessary shame in admitting that you really like the suburbs, or at least certain aspects of the suburbs.  No, were not planning on settling down and having 2.5 kids, but the small village of East Aurora is incredibly cozy with several restaurants and shops that we really enjoy, add bars within walking distance and we’re sold.  This last Saturday was our second visit to Elm Street Bakery, the first was an impromptu visit based on curiosity after hearing all the buzz about the place.  Unfortunately, we had dinner plans later in the day, so we limited our first trip to just two slices of their wood fire pizza but promised that we’d return the following week.  After we finished our second meal there this weekend, Alli and I realized we have found a new favorite place to eat.

Nickel City Cheese & Mercantile, a full service, European inspired, neighborhood cheese and specialty food store, recently opened in the Elmwood Village. In 2010, the Elmwood Village Association conducted a consumer needs survey and identified a cheese shop as one of the top five businesses people would like to see open on Elmwood Avenue. Respondents identified the need for five specific niche businesses: cheese store, hardware store, sporting goods store, butcher shop and seafood store.

Located at 423 Elmwood Ave. in Buffalo, Nickel City Cheese & Mercantile’s current hours of operation are Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Friday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.; and closed on Sunday.
