Western New York Local Restaurant Week

Western New York Local Restaurant Week

Local Restaurant Week is October 15 – 21, 2012

Local Restaurant Week is a bi-annual event that celebrates the vital role our local, independent restaurants play in contributing to our cultural identity and regional economy.  It is a way to celebrate and promote our regional food culture.

To mark the 8th Local Restaurant Week, the Erie County Legislature will officially declare October 15-21, 2012 as Local Restaurant Week in Erie County during session, on Thursday, October 11..

Local Restaurant Week gives consumers the opportunity to be adventurous and try new restaurants for a fixed price of $20.12 and encourages diners to skip national chain restaurants in favor of supporting local independents.

Butterwood is a Stellar Addition to Downtown's Dining Scene

Butterwood is a Stellar Addition to Downtown's Dining Scene

When I first heard about their move to the Hotel Lafayette, I assumed they would be opening a larger dessert shop and catering headquarters. I had no idea, until reading this Buffalo Rising article, that they’d be actually opening a full fledged fine dining restaurant. So last Friday Alli and I decided we’d stop by the hotel and check it out.

DiTondo's Offers Red Sauce in a Nostalgic Setting

DiTondo's Offers Red Sauce in a Nostalgic Setting

If Alli and I are driving down Seneca Street for Italian, it’s always been to visit Chef’s. We’ve heard about DiTondo’s for a while but the main problem was their limited hours (dinner service only on Friday nights from what I understand). But on a Friday night when we couldn’t think of a place to go, we decided to finally try DiTondo’s and see if they could offer some type of unique spin on ‘red sauce Italian’.

The building’s interior (specifically their bar) is almost exactly what I thought it would be, dated in a way that felt nostalgic instead of sad. The bar (surprisingly) had a couple of local micro brews on tap and there appeared to be a collection of regulars having dinner. DiTondo’s has a pretty strong following and you could tell many of the diners ate there on a very regular basis and the waitress’ seemed to know everyone’s names.

Meet Buffalo's Newest Food Truck: The Knight Slider

Meet Buffalo's Newest Food Truck: The Knight Slider

About two weeks ago Knight Slider suddenly appeared on the Buffalo Food Truck scene. We love Buffalo’s Food Trucks, so we were excited to see a new one out and about (I think they were first spotted in Larkinville, damn that place is awesome). It took a few days but I (Alli) finally got a chance to head over for lunch last week while they were parked at the First Niagara Center (they really need some tables in that plaza so people can enjoy their food on the spot).

Seabar is Still Serving Top Notch Food

Seabar is Still Serving Top Notch Food

Seabar is still primarily a sushi restaurant and while we went crazy on raw fish on our first visit, on this recent trip we decided to order some of their more elaborate/non traditional sushi rolls and try something from the kitchen. We ordered the Miso Caramel Crab Roll (above, $11) and their Lobster Roll ($14). Both were fantastic but for completely opposite reasons. The Lobster Roll had avocado, cucumber and large pieces of lobster in a soy wrap. The flavors in the roll were fresh, clean and light, I probably could have eaten two rolls myself. The Miso Caramel Crab Roll was a different but equally as good experience. This sushi roll is tempura fried and filled with crab, caramel, mushroom and cream cheese topped with a thick caramel sauce. Still warm and with a nice outer crunch from the tempura, the combination of salty caramel sauce and cream cheese was heaven. This is one of Alli’s favorite dishes and it isn’t hard to agree with her.
