New Book Release From No Frills Buffalo Focuses On St. Bonaventure Basketball

“SNUBBED: A Basketball Season of Triumph, Crisis and Despair at St. Bonaventure University,” written by veteran journalist Brian Toolan, is the latest release from the No Frills Buffalo publishing company.

Toolan is a veteran journalist who worked for 43 years as a reporter and a ranking editor in the newspaper industry. Positions he has held include sports editor and managing editor of the Philadelphia Daily News, business editor of the Philadelphia Inquirer, editor and senior vice president of the Hartford Courant and national editor of the Associated Press. He was editor of the Courant when it won the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of a murderous rampage at the headquarters of the Connecticut Lottery. Toolan also directed coverage of the Virginia Tech shootings and the Minneapolis bridge collapse while at the Associated Press. He currently resides in New Hope, Pa.

Huge Lineup of Athletes Set to Appear at Sports Collectors Expo in Batavia

Nearly 30 former football, baseball, basketball and hockey players — and one former heavyweight boxing champ — are scheduled to appear at the Sports Collectors Expo Nov. 5 and 6 in Batavia. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Batavia Downs Gaming Center, 8315 Park Road, Batavia.

Former Buffalo Braves scheduled to appear include Bob McAdoo, Nate “Tiny” Archibald and Ernie DiGregorio, as well as NBA greats Rick Barry and JoJo White.

Scheduled to appear from the Buffalo Bills are Joe Cribbs, Jeff Nixon, Jim Cheyunski, Chris Mohr, Butch Rolle, Steve Christie and Carwell Gardner. Other former NFL stars will include Bob Lilly, Kordell Stewart, Reggie Harrison, Jeff Reed, Mike Collier, John “Frenchy” Fuqua, Milt Plum and Mark van Eeghen.

Beckett Card Grading Event Scheduled at Bases Loaded Sports Collectibles

Bases Loaded Sports Collectibles will host Charles Stabile, Northeast regional sales manager from Beckett Grading Services, from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at the store, located at 794 French Road, Cheektowaga.

Beckett Grading Services provides collectors with the most thorough, consistent and accurate grading efforts available in the industry. Your BGS-graded cards will be returned in a unique, protective cardholder. Beckett uses an easy-to-understand one- to 10-point grading scale to rate sports cards, which are graded on four key categories: Centering, corners, edges and surface. Grades from each of these key categories will be considered in determining your card's final overall grade. Beckett also grades non-sports cards, photos, magazines, pocket schedules, gaming cards and tickets.

Reggie McKenzie to Visit Sports Card & Memorabilia Expo on September 18

The next WNY Sports Card & Memorabilia Expo, the area’s largest biannual sports card and memorabilia show featuring over 100 tables of merchandise, will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, at the Grapevine Banquet Hall, 333 Dick Road, Depew.

Former Buffalo Bills star guard Reggie McKenzie will be on hand to sign autographs at the event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. McKenzie was a key member of the “Electric Company,” leading the way for O.J. Simpson to become the NFL’s first 2,000-yard rusher during the 1973 season. The cost is $20 per autograph. 

Vendor tables will feature new and vintage sports cards, non-sports cards, packs, autographs, game programs, yearbooks, pennants, videos, vintage photos and much more. The event will feature local and out-of-state vendors, as well as dealers who are new to this show.

Dog Ears Bookstore to Present Annual Kids ‘I Read It’ Run

Dog Ears Bookstore & Café will host the annual Kids “I Read It” Run for children ages 4 to 10 on Sunday, Sept. 25, at the Cazenovia Park Casino. 

There will be three age categories, with children ages 4 and 5 beginning at 10 a.m., ages 6 and 7 at 10:30 a.m., and ages 8 to 10 at 11 a.m. There will also be plenty of prizes and surprises for participants.

The pre-registration cost is $10, with registrations due by Sept. 21. Please contact the bookstore for details. The cost is $12 on the day of the race.

Hall of Famer Bill Polian to Sign Autographs at Bases Loaded Sports Collectibles

Bill Polian, the former general manager of the Buffalo Bills known as the architect of the city’s Super Bowl era teams, will visit Bases Loaded Sports Collectibles in Cheektowaga for an autograph-signing event from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 17. Bases Loaded is located at 794 French Road, between Union and Transit roads.

A Buffalo Bills Wall of Fame inductee in 2012 and a Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee in 2015, Polian is also known for his work with the Carolina Panthers and Indianapolis Colts. He currently serves as an NFL analyst for ESPN.

Justin Bailey to Sign Autographs at Bases Loaded Sports Collectibles

Buffalo Sabres right wing and Williamsville native Justin Bailey will visit Bases Loaded Sports Collectibles from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, for an autograph-signing event. Bases Loaded is located at 794 French Road in Cheektowaga.

Bailey was selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the second round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Last year he played in eight games with the Sabres and 70 games with the Rochester Americans, where he produced 20 goals and 25 assists.

Autographs will be free with the purchase of a photo, puck or other hockey item from Bases Loaded.
